The Project
The project concerns the digitisation and use of the Historical Archive of (10) ten Communities of the Municipality of Western Lesvos. With the use of new technologies, more than 6,500 historical documents and volumes concerning the ten (10) communities of the Municipality of Western Lesvos have been digitised and documented, spanning from the late 17th century to the mid-20th century (1650-1970). In particular, material was collected from the Communities of Agia Paraskevi, Filias, Arisvi, Skalochori, Polihnitos, Mantamados, Sykamia, Petra, Molyvos and Eresos. Through the study of some 300 years of local history, the social, economic and ethnological factors that shaped the living conditions on the western side of the island are presented. The scientific documentation of these historical artefacts makes all events accessible to all citizens, removing geographical restrictions and saving time of their research.
With the implementation of this project, the aim is to highlight documents, books, archival documents and folklore material of unique and inestimable value, which, due to their importance and the urgent need to be preserved from the ravages of time, have been digitised, documented and made available to the general public, free of charge through this web portal.
